Remembering Call Center Strife

I remember my days when I used to work in the call center industry. It has been quite a struggle, being in a job that I rarely have any passion for. It came to a point that I almost thought of myself as half-human and half-robot.

It was my mom who urged me to apply. She wasn't impressed with the meager income that I was earning from my work as a fitness trainer. I applied at Convergys upon her insistence to do so. It was the biggest surprise of my life  when I got accepted as a Technical Support Engineer despite not graduating with a computer-related course. Hence, my voyage to uncharted waters has begun.

It was like living in oblivion then, never minding my stats and always in a rush for a way out of a difficult call. Taking calls has always been a daunting task and doing it repetitively has never made it any less tolerable. I mean, who seriously considers taking calls as a profession, right? I remembered the time where a customer almost sued me for letting him know that I could access his emails. There was a time when I broke down in tears because I couldn't fathom the gibberish talk the customer was uttering and she was already so frustrated at me. There was also a time where I literally hanged up on a call because the customer is just too impossible to handle. I was even warned by my boss before to be extra cautious with my calls.

I must say I've been through one of the worst jobs in my life but it was worth it. It has toughen me up especially when dealing with customers. I met friends and shared great times with them. Most importantly, I met the love of my life :)

It's true things happen for a reason. Because of my prior experience in tech support, I got immediately accepted in an IT Helpdesk role. And from then on, I slowly climbed my way to the IT world. In conclusion, my experience then in the call center has paved the way for my IT career.

I now work as a Systems Engineer and though I no longer take inbound calls, it's still a fun ride going down memory lane.
