The Day I Said 'I Do'
June 23, 2013 marked the day of my transition from singledom to marriedhood. In this day, I officially became Mrs. Michael Magno.
I couldn't describe how profound my happiness was at that day. At the same time a plethora of mixed emotions of stress, excitement and joy seemed to coagulate into one indescribable feeling. All I could think of that day was that I'm finally getting married! I finally get to say 'I do' to the man whom I have loved and cherished for so many years.
I've always thought that marriage is overrated and that women makes a big fuss over the details of a big conventional church wedding. I was actually considering to have a simple civil wedding at first since I want to save my sanity from all the hullabaloo of big wedding preparations. I just find it more practical to squander our money on an unforgettable honeymoon rather than on a single-day event where people are apt to forget after awhile. Most often weddings are for show and I find them too traditional and formal on how they are celebrated in the Philippines.
So when my husband and I decided that we throw in a big wedding celebration just to satisfy our parents' wishes, we've agreed to make it as different as possible, hence, the rock and roll rooftop theme. We didn't adhere to the typical standards of an elaborate church wedding of having a complete set of entourage with matching godparents whose numbers could already outweigh an entire basketball team! I even had a battle of wills with my mom since I never wanted a church wedding. I'm not a believer of the Catholic church (I just recently turned atheist) so I see no need for it.
Both Mike and I did our share of the legwork in preparing everything. It was a flurry of activity but it look less time as most couples do. We didn't waste time in deciding what we want. I must say it has been quite effective in getting the results that we want.
It has been a wedding to remember. The ceremony was held on a rooftop overlooking the entire city. At the reception, the place reverberated with lively beats of rock and roll music. The place was decked out in shades of black, pink and white. I even had my cake in black! I got to wear my short gown (just like a rock and roll bride!) and Mike looked like Neo from the movie 'Matrix'. It has been a very festive affair rather than a traditional solemn one that most people are accustomed to seeing. I must admit a lot of people are blown away by the concept. It's a wedding rarely seen in the Philippines.
Yet a wedding is just an occasion---a beginning to the next challenging phase of our lives as a couple. Marriage is a whole new world to discover and I'm all up to such daunting task. It's just funny how a wedding could suddenly change your outlook in life! It has totally changed mine. For what greater joy is there in life than becoming a wife and a mother?
