My First Job
Who would have known that my first job was a fitness trainer? Yep, you heard it right. It's always been a surprise coming from a person who has been working in IT for several years. After passing my PT board exam in 2003 and taking a short break, I went around looking for jobs. Sad to say, PT opportunities in the Philippines are very scarce. I had almost called it quits in my third to fourth year in college. By the time I was a licensed PT and was out seeking the world for my first job, my realization that I must have made the biggest mistake has fully crystallized.
When Slimmers World called me up for an interview, I was ecstatic. At that time I was also considering an opportunity with Center for Pop as a voice coach (yeah talk about strange jobs!). When Slimmers World gave me the offer after my interview, I immediately took it even though the salary was barely at its minimum. I never thought twice as I have preferred it than becoming a PT volunteer for no pay at all.
It was a different experience and I was totally ignorant on the ways of the world at that time. I got to meet a diverse set of colleagues from young to old with different perspectives in life. I also experienced having to apologize to clients for things I have unknowingly done and even though my pride couldn't take it, I still had to do it. It wasn't a rewarding experience. I got to be in the busiest shift and since I was the only female trainer, ladies flocked for my attention. It was tiring and at the end of the day when customers complain, I still take the heat.
Perhaps I was a lost soul back then. My heart wasn't really into what I do and I didn't know what I want to do. For the first time, I was out of school and I had no clear direction. All I could think of was how to get the money and buy stuff that I couldn't afford when I was a student. It took me some years to mature and finally possess the drive to succeed.
Looking back to that time with my first job, I just couldn't help but smile and sometimes laugh as it has always served as a good story to share with my IT colleagues. It has been an unforgettable work experience. Good or bad, I believe in some way it has shaped me into becoming who I am now.
