Revisiting EDSA Revolution

Feb. 25, 1986... the day that marked one of the most famous events in Philippine history-- the EDSA Revolution. This was the day that has led to the downfall of a dictator who was the late Ferdinand Marcos and the rise to power of a housewife-- Corazon Aquino, who has gained the sympathy of the masses after the death of her husband Ninoy Aquino. For most of us Filipinos, this event is an epitome of how our country regained its freedom from tyranny. Little did they know how twisted our history is from the truth.

I remember when I was a kid on how the adults in my home talk of this event. I was so scared then because I kept imagining bombs and tanks barricading the streets. I was brainwashed into thinking that Marcos is the bad guy and that Cory is the savior. How that mentality has changed over the years.

One thing we need to point out is that Cory didn't lead the EDSA revolution. She was happily tucked away in Cebu when this all happened. She only became a mere symbol, a puppet used by the people against Marcos so they can overthrow him from power.

Martial Law has festered various emotions and reactions from the public. This cataclysmic event along with the tragic demise of Benigno Aquino has culminated in the so-called EDSA Revolution. This was what we believed to have happened. Little did we know that Aquino protagonists had cooked up something in their sleeves to overthrow Marcos from power. Furthermore, Aquino's death wasn't Marcos' doing and we all know that he's too smart to do something of the kind. He never wanted Aquino to die because doing so would ultimately make him a hero. There were actually speculations that Aquino himself staged his death.

I have read an article from Bong Bong Marcos regarding the EDSA revolution. He stated that rather putting the blame on Marcos and regarding the Aquinos as heroes from this historical event, let's think back and review what has changed in our country since then. Has it provided more food to the hungry mouths of the impoverished? Were more jobs provided to the unemployed? Has it improved our socio-economic status and lessen the crime rate? Frankly, nothing phenomenal has ever truly happened since the EDSA revolution. For me they have only dethroned the best President our country has ever had. True, Marcos may be corrupt and have imprisoned a lot of civilians but he has done our country a lot of good. And just to add, those civilians he had imprisoned were mostly rebels who oppose and cause destabilization in his government. You can never see a President with more accomplishments that Marcos has ever achieved. He may be a dictator but he has led our country to progressive heights that we can never achieve now.

I can only laugh and wonder at people who are dumb enough to say that the EDSA Revolution has led our country to democracy.  Can they still say the same thing in the midst of our economic decadence now? We were far off worse now than we were during Marcos' time. Because of democracy, our government became more corrupt, the lower class became more impoverished, people became less disciplined and crime became more rampant.

Honestly, there's no sense in celebrating the EDSA Revolution anymore. Beside it being a reminder of one of the worst mistakes our country has committed in history, it also signifies the birth of our country's downfall.
